Doig Intermediate Students Recognized by Garden Grove City Council for Mural Advocacy
- Friday, March 28, 2025

A group of dedicated students from Doig Intermediate School’s Student Action Committee was recognized this week by the Garden Grove City Council for the students’ efforts in advocating for a new mural near their school. The City Council commended the students for their civic engagement which led to a successful collaboration between the city and school with the beautiful new mural depicting the journey of students progressing one step at a time toward lifelong success.
Led by their teacher, Mrs. Singh-Luth, the Student Action Committee first presented their idea to the City Council in April 2023. The students passionately voiced their desire for a mural that would not only beautify the neighborhood, but also serve as a symbol of progress for young people in their community. Through multiple discussions with the city manager and council members, their proposal gained traction and ultimately received approval.
Now completed, the mural stands as a testament to the students' commitment to civic engagement and their belief in the power of advocacy. The project has also reinforced the importance of youth involvement in local government and community development.
Garden Grove Unified School Board President Lan Nguyen and Trustee Walter Muneton attended the city council meeting to thank the city for their partnership and applaud the students for making a positive impact on their community.
“As a former Doig Intermediate School student who now serves on the Board of Education, it makes me especially proud to see our students getting engaged in their community and recognizing the power of their voice,” said Trustee Muneton. “When students are engaged in civics, they gain a sense of ownership and responsibility for the world around them. They learn that their voices matter, and that they can create meaningful change and leave their mark on the community.
