Garden Grove Unified School District Students Show Growth on State Test

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students demonstrated significant growth and exceeded state averages at all grade levels in both math and English on the state’s Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (SBAC) test, according to results released by the state Department of Education this week. This is the second year of results from the SBAC test which is administered as part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).

An impressive 66% of GGUSD students met or exceeded standards in English Language Arts (ELA) in 11th grade and 54% of 3rd graders met or exceeded standards in Math. Of the 25 largest school districts in California serving a free/reduced lunch percentage of 65% or higher, GGUSD has the highest percentage of students scoring met or exceeded standards on ELA and Math for the 2016 SBAC.

“Our students continue to meet high academic expectations and demonstrate mastery of rigorous curriculum and critical thinking skills,” said Linda Reed, GGUSD Board of Education trustee. “We know that our impressive performance on the SBAC test is due to our strong instructional program and our dedicated teachers and support staff.”

GGUSD scores on the 2016 SBAC improved across all grade levels from 2015. Students who met or exceeded standards grew from 38.7% to 45.6% in math and from 49.3% to 54.9% in English Language Arts. In 6th and 8th grade math, GGUSD outperformed the county average and in 7th, 8th and 11th grade ELA, GGUSD students met the countywide average of students who met or exceeded state standards.
