GGUSD Receives Grant to Expand Literacy Coaching

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) has been awarded nearly $2 million through the state’s Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists Grant Program to expand dedicated school-based Literacy Coaches to four additional elementary schools: Eisenhower, Newhope, Russell, and Simmons. This funding will support these schools through the 2028-2029 school year.

This marks the second allocation that GGUSD has received through the program. In 2023-2024, the district received $1.9 million to provide Literacy Coaches through 2027-2028 at Clinton, Heritage, Hazard, and Rosita elementary schools, as well as the district’s Special Education Center at Mark Twain.

The grant supports the placement of site-based Literacy Coaches who deliver targeted reading intervention for students and ongoing coaching for teachers. Coaches focus on strengthening early literacy and foundational reading skills by providing in-class support, small-group instruction, and after-school interventions. They also work closely with teachers to enhance instructional practices and improve student outcomes.

“GGUSD is proud to receive this important investment to strengthen early reading instruction and provide targeted support that helps students become strong, confident readers,” said Board of Education President Lan Nguyen. “This grant allows us to strengthen our capacity to reach more students with the literacy skills they need for academic success.”

GGUSD remains committed to closing achievement gaps and ensuring every student learns to read at or above grade level.
