Walton Student Secures 2nd Place at 2025 National Civics Bee
- Friday, March 14, 2025

Walton Intermediate School seventh grader Arlo Fravien achieved an outstanding second place finish at the prestigious National Civics Bee Regional Competition held at the Nixon Library.
Arlo’s journey to the National Civics Bee was no easy feat. His selection as one of 20 students to compete in the Bee was based on an insightful essay which included his proposal to create a Trash Force to reduce waste in Orange County, protecting the public’s right to clean spaces and a healthy environment. During the competition, Arlo successfully navigated multiple challenging rounds, including two Multiple Choice Quiz Rounds, determining the top ten competitors.
Advancing to the final stage, Arlo had the opportunity to present his project proposal to a panel of judges. His well-prepared presentation was followed by an engaging Q&A session, where he demonstrated his deep understanding and ability to articulate his vision. Based on overall performance, the top three students were selected to advance to the upcoming California State Championship at the Reagan Library. From there, one representative will move on to the National Competition in Washington, D.C. to compete for a $100,000 college scholarship.
Arlo was among two Garden Grove Unified School District students to compete in the National Civics Bee, along with Stanford Elementary School sixth grader Ronald Bui.
“Arlo’s achievement is a source of immense pride for our district, and we commend the many hours he spent preparing and refining his presentation,” said Board of Education President Lan Nguyen. “Being selected as one of only 20 scholars across the entire county for mastery of civic education is truly impressive.”
Arlo received support and guidance from World and U.S. History Teacher Mrs. Ashley Stevens who supported him to ensure he was well-prepared for the rigor of the Civics Bee. Arlo is enrolled in Mrs. Steven’s World History course and Academic Pentathlon team. Mrs. Stevens consistently looks for opportunities to extend students’ learning beyond the classroom to help students realize they have a voice in the community and can have an impact on the world.
